What is the FAFSA?

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is your gateway to getting the financial assistance you need to complete your college degree.

The FAFSA opens every Oct. 1. Be sure to apply early in order to ensure prompt processing. Besides student loans, the FAFSA can also qualify you for scholarships and grants.

It doesn’t cost anything to fill out a FAFSA and usually takes less than an hour to complete.

What do you need to file a FAFSA?

  • FSA ID, which you’ll create at

  • Social Security number.

  • Driver’s license.

  • Bank statements.

  • Parent information (if you’re a dependent).

  • W-2 forms and tax returns from two years ago. You may use an estimated income; however, ASU may require you to verify your income.
